What is a credit card limit?
A credit card limit is the most you can borrow on your account at any one time. We set your limit when you open your account, and we may review it from time to time. You can find your credit limit and available credit in Mobile Banking, Online Banking and on your monthly credit card statement.
Example: If your credit limit is £1,000, and you spend £300, you’ll usually have £700 of available credit remaining.
Depending on how you manage your card, we may offer to increase your credit limit or reduce it.

If you’d like to discuss increasing or reducing your credit limit, get in touch and we’ll explain the options available to you.
What happens if you go over your credit limit?
It’s important to stay within your agreed credit limit. If you’re over your credit limit, you’ll be charged an over limit fee. Going over your credit limit could also affect your credit record and may make it harder to get credit in the future.
Reviewing your credit limit
We regularly review your account and the credit limit you have available. After a review, your limit may increase, decrease or stay the same. If you’re eligible for an increase, you’ll be able to see and change your available limit in our Mobile Banking app or in Online Banking. You can choose how you’d like to be made aware of credit limit increases and how you’d like to manage them.
You can ask us to:
- tell you if a higher credit limit is available but you’ll need to contact us to accept the increase
- increase your credit limit automatically. We’ll let you know before the increase is made.
Before accepting a higher credit limit, consider whether it’s right for you. A higher limit may give you more choice. But it may mean you borrow more and take longer to pay back what you owe.
You can ask us to stop offering you credit limit increases or decline an increase before it takes effect.
Want to change your credit limit?
You can see your maximum credit limit in Online Banking or our Mobile Banking app. If you’re eligible for a credit limit increase, you can manage this yourself in a few simple steps. If an increase isn’t available, get in touch and we’ll review your account. We’ll check whether an increase is right for you before we agree to it.
It’s important to think about the limit you need and ensure you only borrow what you can afford. If you’re thinking about reducing your credit limit, think about anything you’ve used your card for recently that may not have cleared on your statement.
You can also ask us to reduce your credit limit at any time, in the Mobile Banking app, in Online Banking or by phone.
Please remember to only spend what you can afford. If you need any tips or financial support, view our Help With Managing Your Money page.
