If you try to make a payment that would take you into an Unarranged Overdraft, we’ll decide whether or not to pay it depending on your circumstances. As a result, you may incur a Paid or Unpaid Transaction Fee.

The Everyday Current Account has a monthly cap for unarranged overdraft fees of £95. A total overdraft fee cap of £95 will also apply to your account meaning if you incur any arranged and/or unarranged fees (including paid and unpaid fees) in any monthly statement period, these will never be more than £95 in total.

Overdraft alerts
By 2nd February 2018 we’ll automatically send you alerts about your balance and payments in order to help you avoid charges e.g. when you’re in an unarranged overdraft, a payment has gone unpaid or you need to pay money in to cover a payment. These alerts are free, and will be sent by text message or email if we don’t have your mobile number.

Once your account has been registered for these alerts, you can update your alert settings, including switching the alerts off,  at any time by logging onto Online Banking, visiting one of our branches or by calling us on 0800 9 123 123. You can apply for the Everyday Current Account if you are 18 years of age or over and live in the UK permanently.

Switching your existing current account to the Everyday Current Account

  • You can either switch to a new account, or one you've already got with us

  • Our dedicated switcher team will switch all of your Direct Debits, standing orders and your salary

  • Choose when your switch starts - this can be up to 60 days in the future

  • Your switch will only take 7 working days

  • We'll keep you updated of progress by letter, text and e-mail

  • We'll close your old account and redirect any payments to your Santander Current Account 

  • You could get a 4 month fee-free Arranged Overdraft when you switch to us. (Overdrafts are offered depending on your circumstances.)

How to switch

If you don't already have a Santander Current Account, you can apply online or in a branch. We'll ask you during the application if you want to switch an account you hold elsewhere to Santander.

If you're an existing customer and you have an account with another provider that you would like to switch to your existing Santander account, please visit your local branch

To switch you'll need to give us

  • your existing sort code and account number

  • your existing debit card number and expiry date. If you are switching a joint account to us, we'll need the debit card details for all applicants

It’s very important that you keep your banking details private and secure.

  • Never share a Santander One Time Passcode (OTP) with another person. Not even a Santander employee.
  • Never download software or let anyone log on to your computer or devices remotely during or after a cold call.
  • Never enter your Online Banking details after clicking on a link in an email or text message.

Frequently asked questions

  • Yes, the Everyday Current Account comes with a contactless card, subject to eligibility. If you aren’t eligible, you’ll receive a Visa debit card without contactless functionality.

  • You can use your Santander debit card abroad to make purchases and to withdraw local currency from cash machines as and when you need it. Simply look for the Visa sign, and feel secure knowing that it's a safer option than carrying large amounts of cash or traveller's cheques.

     

    If you’re a cash card customer you can use your card to withdraw local currency from cash machines abroad wherever you see the Cirrus sign. Charges may apply. For full details please see the General Terms & Conditions

     

    For further peace of mind, please tell us about your travel arrangements using Online Banking (go to 'Use card abroad' in 'Account services'), your nearest Santander branch  or by calling us on 0800 9 123 123 (lines are open 7am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 9pm on Sunday). We will continue to monitor your account for fraud and unusual transactions whilst you’re abroad. We'll attempt to contact you if we detect unusual activity, make sure we have up to date contact details for you before you travel. If you keep your mobile phone with you, you'll be able to confirm genuine transactions as soon as we contact you. Also, remember to make a note of our phone number from the back of your card, if you notice any unusual transactions or your card is lost or stolen, let us know as soon as possible.

  • We'll review your eligibility for the Select Current Account regularly. If you no longer meet the criteria, we'll contact you to explain your options.

AER explained
AER stands for Annual Equivalent Rate and shows what the interest rate would be if we paid interest and added it to your account each year.

The gross rate is the interest rate we pay where no income tax has been deducted.

EAR explained
EAR stands for Effective Annual Rate and represents the yearly cost of an overdraft, which takes account of how often we charge interest to the account, and does not include any other fees or charges.

Overdrafts depend on your circumstances and you must repay any overdraft when we ask in line with our General Terms and Conditions.
