Select Current Account

The current account that gives you more with the Santander Select service. All for a £5 monthly account fee.  

Santander Select is a more personal banking service which offers you:

  • Personal support from a Relationship Manager
  • 24 hour priority service at home and abroad
  • Preferential products
  • Access to Santander Select globally

Join Santander Select by opening the Select Current Account, which also gives you:

  • Monthly interest of 1.50% AER / 1.49% gross (variable) payable on your entire balance up to £20,000. Monthly cashback on selected household bills
  • Exclusive Santander Select Visa debit card
  • Fee-free withdrawals at Santander cash machines abroad
  • Access to emergency cash and card replacement service

Plus a preferential overdraft tariff and a £1,000 daily cash machine withdrawal limit.

To qualify you need to:

  • Pay your main income of at least £5,000 per month into the Select Current Account (excluding transfers from other Santander accounts)
  • Or keep £75,000 in any Santander investment(s), savings or current accounts

We’ll review your eligibility for the Select Current Account regularly. If you no longer meet the criteria, we’ll contact you to explain your options.

To get interest on your balance and cashback on your household bills, just follow these steps:

  • Pay at least £500 into your account each month. Any interest paid and payments between Santander personal account you’re named on won’t count towards this.
  • Have at least 2 active direct debits. You’ll get monthly cashback on selected household bills you pay by Direct Debit.

With the Select Current Account you will get an exclusive Visa debit card, interest on your balance and cashback on your household bills.

Interest and Cashback

With an in-credit interest rate and cashback on your household bills, make the most of your banking with the Select Current Account.

Monthly interest of 1.50% AER / 1.49% gross (variable) payable on your entire balance up to £20,000

You will earn:

  • Cashback can only be earned through household bills paid by Direct Debit
  • Household bills do not include TV licence, maintenance contracts (e.g. boiler repair cover), other insurance contracts, bills for commercial use or commercial mortgages

You may hold a maximum of two accounts across the Select Current Account and 1I2I3 Current Account. One in your name and one in joint names.  

How it works – cashback and interest

  • There is a £5 monthly account fee, that will be automatically taken from your account each month

To get cashback on your household bills and interest on your balance, just follow these steps: 

  • Pay at least £500 into your account each month. Any interest paid, and payments between Santander personal accounts you’re named on won't count towards this
     
  • Have at least 2 active Direct Debits - you'll receive cashback on any qualifying household bills you pay by Direct Debit 

Overdraft

If you request an overdraft then the first £500 is fee free with your Select Current Account. Your arranged overdraft fees would be as follows:

Unarranged Overdraft Usage Fee  £6 per day

 

A total overdraft fee cap of £95 will also apply to your account meaning if you incur any arranged and/or unarranged fees in any monthly statement period, these will never be more than £95 in total.

If you try to make a payment that would take you into an Unarranged Overdraft, we'll decide whether or not to pay it depending on your circumstances.

We will waive the 2.75% foreign exchange fee as well as the £1.99/1.5% cash handling fee when you use Santander branded cash machines in Germany, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, USA and Brazil. Some cash machines may give you the option to transact in Sterling or the local currency; please select local currency to avoid being charged fees. Not all cash machines allow you to withdraw £1,000 in one transaction so you may need to take out your money in multiple transactions. Emergency cash and card replacement is available worldwide except Cuba, India, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and Turkmenistan

Cashback paid monthly but may vary depending on how you pay your bill or insurance premium. The 1% cashback on water and council tax bills also applies to rates in Northern Ireland.
 

Switching your existing current account to the Select Current Account

Stress-free switching in just 7 working days

  • You can either switch to a new account, or one you've already got with us

  • Our dedicated switcher team will switch all of your Direct Debits, standing orders and your salary or other income

  • Choose when your switch starts - this can be up to 60 days in the future

  • Your switch will only take 7 working days

  • We'll keep you updated of progress by letter, text and e-mail

  • We'll close your old account and redirect any payments to your Santander Current Account 

  • You could get a 4 month fee-free Arranged Overdraft when you switch to us. (Overdrafts are offered depending on your circumstances.)

How to switch

Switching to Santander is hassle free and can be completed in just 7 working days.

You can apply online, in a branch or by calling us on 0800 032 3323. We will ask you during the application if you want to switch an account you hold elsewhere to Santander.

To switch you'll need to give us

  • your existing sort code and account number

  • your existing debit card number and expiry date. If you are switching a joint account to us, we'll need the debit card details for all applicants

Overdraft alerts
By 2nd February 2018 we’ll automatically send you alerts about your balance and payments in order to help you avoid charges e.g. when you’re in an unarranged overdraft, a payment has gone unpaid or you need to pay money in to cover a payment.

Once your account has been registered for these alerts, you can update your alert settings, including switching the alerts off,  at any time by logging onto Online Banking, visiting one of our branches or by calling us on 0800 032 3323.

Protect yourself from fraud

It’s very important that you keep your banking details private and secure.

  • Never share a Santander One Time Passcode (OTP) with another person. Not even a Santander employee.
  • Never download software or let anyone log on to your computer or devices remotely during or after a cold call.
  • Never enter your Online Banking details after clicking on a link in an email or text message.

You can apply for a new Select Current Account online in just 10 minutes if you:

  • are 18 years of age or over

  • live in the UK permanently 

  • meet the Select eligibility criteria
    • either pay your main income of at least £5,000 per month into a Select current account (excluding transfers from other Santander accounts),
    • or maintain £75,000 in any Santander investment(s), savings or current account.

AER explained
AER stands for Annual Equivalent Rate and shows what the interest rate would be if we paid interest and added it to your account each year.

Gross rate explained
The gross rate is the interest rate we pay where no income tax has been deducted.
Rates may change and we pay interest each month.

EAR explained

EAR stands for Effective Annual Rate and represents the yearly cost of an overdraft, which takes account of how often we charge interest to the account, and does not include any other fees or charges. Overdrafts depend on your circumstances and you must repay any overdraft when we ask in line with our General Terms and Conditions.
