What's changing?
The way we deal with cheques is changing so that you’ll be able to get to your funds by the end of the next working day.

Starting in October 2017, when we receive a cheque we’ll take a digital picture of it. This means we’ll be able to process cheques faster, so that when you pay a cheque into your account you’ll be able to withdraw and earn interest on the money from the next working day, even if the cheque is from another bank or building society.

The launch will be a phased approach and is expected to be completed mid-2018. Initially, the change will affect a small number of customers, so until the rollout is complete the current paper clearing system will still be used alongside the new system.

 

If you’re writing cheques
Because cheques will start to clear faster it will be important to make sure you have enough funds in your account before writing a cheque. 

The new process doesn’t support re-presentment of cheques, so if yours bounces you’ll need to either write  a new cheque or make alternative arrangements with the person you were trying to pay.  

You may find that whilst we are working to fully adopt the new system, some cheques are processed using the old method. If this is the case, the funds will be made available to you under the previous cheque clearance timescale.
