YMCA Humber has received £5,000 to fund a money management programme for residents of its supported accommodation project in Grimsby.

The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation, which offers Discovery Grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities.

The charity provides people with an interim place to live and the support they need to move successfully into their own permanent home. YMCA Humber has been operating in North East Lincolnshire since 1906 and offers supported accommodation at its Peaks Lane Hostel and The Foyer in Grimsby.

The grant will enable YMCA Humber, working in partnership with The Money Charity, to develop a bespoke training package that helps residents learn how to manage their money. YMCA services focus on young people aged 16 – 25, with the aim of helping create communities in which young people feel they can thrive.

Helen Pine, Acting CEO at YMCA Humber, said: “This grant will make a huge difference to the support we are able to offer our residents. Debt problems and lack of financial security are significant stress factors for those we work with. Creating this resource and providing training for our staff will ensure that we can help people to look at their finances differently with the aim of resolving their money problems.”

Richard Harrison, Branch Manager at Santander’s Grimsby Branch, said: “The Santander Foundation makes hundreds of donations every year to good causes throughout the UK. We are committed to playing a key part in the community and we are delighted to be supporting YMCA Humber and hope the donation makes a real difference to local people.”
