Gloucestershire young carers given helping hand by the Santander Foundation

Gloucestershire Young Carers has received £4,000 from the Santander Foundation to fund the charity’s work with young adult carers in Gloucestershire.

The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation, which offers Discovery Grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities.

The charity supports more than 1,000 young carers: young people who are supporting a family member who is ill, disabled, experiencing mental ill health or who is affected by substance misuse. It works with the young people and their families to reduce the impact on them of their caring role, which often includes detrimental effects on their own health and wellbeing, social exclusion and low self-esteem.

Gloucestershire Young Carers supports a variety of young people across the county, including 19-year-old Tye, whose mum experiences mental ill health. He explained that he has spent many nights sitting with her through anxiety attacks and admitted that this had an impact on his own health.

The charity applied for funding to help young adult carers like Tye through providing support such as one to one mentoring, social activities and away days.

Tye explained how the support he has received from the charity has helped build his self-esteem to the point where he now takes part in presentations to audiences about the challenges he and his family have faced.

Jane Dyer, Fundraising Manager at Gloucestershire Young Carers, says: “We are delighted to receive support from Santander and to have been given the opportunity to talk to staff about the issues faced by young carers in the county. We would like to thank the bank for funding which will go on to help many more young adult carers at a vital point in their lives.”

Spencer Harling, Branch Manager at Santander’s Gloucester branch, said: “The Santander Foundation makes hundreds of donations to local projects every year with the aim of assisting organisations, communities and vulnerable people throughout the UK. The staff at our branch know the great work Gloucestershire Young Carers does in our community and we hope this grant will help them in their support for local people.”
