The British Red Cross in Oxfordshire has received £5,000 to fund specialist wheelchairs for children who have become less mobile due to a recent injury or illness.

The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation which offers grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities.

The British Red Cross in Oxfordshire, including Banbury, offers a mobility aid loan service for families to borrow a wheelchair so children can get back to school and back to their everyday lives as soon as possible.

The grant will allow the charity to purchase and maintain twelve specialised children’s wheelchairs with leg extensions. Over a five year period, the new chairs will help more than 375 children and their families, and will assist the charity to meet the large regional demand for the service.

Paula Falck, Senior Community Fundraiser in Oxfordshire for The British Red Cross said: “This grant is timely and much appreciated. We have a shortage of specialised children’s wheelchairs and this money will make sure we can help all the local children who need this service after an accident or stay in hospital. We are very grateful to the Santander Foundation for its generosity and for selecting our project.”

Andrew Baker, Branch Director at Santander’s Banbury branch said: “The Santander Foundation makes hundreds of donations every year to good causes throughout the UK. Our branch is committed to playing a key part in the community and we are delighted to be supporting the British Red Cross in Oxfordshire and hope the donation makes a real difference to local children.”
