Employees from Santander’s Solent Business Centre recently spent the day at Marwell Zoo helping to restore and maintain the grounds.

The activity, which was part of the bank’s Discovery Days scheme, saw 14 volunteers help refresh the pond area to create the right environment and habitat for the animals by cultivating the soil, reseeding, cutting bushes and clearing debris.

Marwell Zoo near Winchester is a 140 acre zoo owned and run by the registered charity Marwell Wildlife. The charity is dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and other natural resources.

Andy Welsh, Education Business Administrator at Marwell Wildlife, said: "Marwell Wildlife connects people with nature and I would like to extend my personal thanks to the cheerful, enthusiastic Santander volunteers. We’re incredibly grateful for the work they completed; they did a fantastic job tidying the area around the pond for the benefit of the animals and visitors alike."

Alex Fuller, Regional Director at Santander’s Solent Business Centre, said: "It felt great to be able to give something back to our community. We chose Marwell Wildlife because it is a fantastic charity that helps to educate all generations about the importance of conservation and the protection of animals and we were thrilled to have been able to help."

Santander's Discovery Days scheme encourages staff to take a day out of the office to volunteer with a local cause. Last year over 3,900 members of staff took part in more than 360 projects across the country, including refurbishing local schools, hospitals and helping with community projects.
