The Tomorrow’s Skills report looks at adults’ attitudes to lifelong learning and gaining new skills. The report is based on a global survey, which included the UK, of over 15,000 people between 18 and 65 years old.
What did we discover about how UK adults feel about learning?
- People don’t want to stop learning once they’ve left school or university.
81% of people think it’s important to receive continuous training. 72% think it’s essential for staying in the job market.
- Workers are looking to their employers to provide a variety of training.
Over half of people think that companies should keep training their staff. There's a particular interest in soft skills and new technologies.
- Practical education is seen to be just as valuable as formal education.
47% of people said that practical experience will be more important than having a formal degree.
And this is impacting businesses all over the world. The World Economic Forum has warned that 50% of employees across the globe will need to learn new skills to keep up with an ever-changing job market. The European Commission has advised that one in four small to medium businesses face a skills shortage.
Ana Botín, Executive Chair of Santander said in the report ‘To address this, the education landscape is shifting. Lifelong learning is no longer optional – it is a basic need for anyone who wants to thrive in this new era.’
However, the survey reveals that although 81% of people are willing to continue learning, there are obstacles to this. Cost (44%) and a lack of time (31%) are seen as the biggest barriers to gaining new skills as an adult.
How can businesses provide the training that’s expected?
