Protect your mortgage

Life Insurance and Life and Critical Illness Insurance
Provided, administered and underwritten by Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited

Mortgage-related life insurance could be useful for your family to help pay off any mortgage debt if you're diagnosed with a critical illness or if you die. This means that your loved ones could continue to live in your family home even if you're no longer around, without worrying about how they'll pay the mortgage.

If you have children, a partner or other relatives who depend on your income to cover the mortgage payments, it's worth giving consideration to life insurance, as it provides a cash lump sum to help pay off your mortgage in the event of your death or a specified critical illness. This isn't intended as a replacement for regular income.

At Santander we offer Life Insurance and Life and Critical Illness Insurance from Aviva to protect your mortgage

  • Life insurance: this aims to pay out a one-off cash lump sum if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness within the term of the policy.

  • Critical illness insurance: this aims to provide a one-off cash lump sum payment in the event of you being diagnosed with a specified critical illness covered by the policy. Not all conditions are covered. This cover is taken out alongside life insurance.

Life Insurance and Life and Critical Illness Insurance have no cash-in value at any time, and exclusions and limitations will apply.

There are some important things to consider before you apply

  • When a claim for life, critical illness or terminal illness has been paid out, your policy will end and cover will stop. If you have joint cover, the policy only pays out once.

  • At the end of your policy's term, your premiums will stop, your cover will end and you will get nothing back.

  • Not all critical illnesses are covered. For a full list of illnesses that are covered you should refer to the Life and Critical Illness Insurance Policy terms and conditions (pdf) and the Life and Critical Illness Insurance key features document (pdf).

  • To make a claim for some critical illnesses, you will need to have permanent symptoms or an illness of a specified severity.

  • For any critical illness claim you must survive for at least 14 days for the policy to pay out.

  • If you stop paying premiums, your cover will end, and you will get nothing back.

Life Insurance and Life and Critical Illness Insurance have no cash-in value at any time, and exclusions and limitations will apply. The chances are your mortgage is probably your biggest financial commitment. In the event of critical illness or even death, if your mortgage is protected it means that your loved ones won't have to worry about how they're going to make repayments.

There are two types of cover available to support your mortgage

Level cover: this runs for a fixed period of time and is often used to protect an interest-only mortgage.

  • It provides certainty as the cover and premium stays the same throughout the term of your policy.

Mortgage decreasing cover: this runs for a fixed period of time but the cash lump sum reduces each month broadly in line with the amount outstanding on a repayment (capital and interest) mortgage.

  • As what you owe on the mortgage reduces over time, so does the cover, but your premium will remain the same.

  • Please note there is no guarantee that it will be sufficient to repay your mortgage in full.

How much life cover might you need?

For mortgage-related life insurance you'll need to know the amount of your mortgage debt and the term of your mortgage as that will determine how much cover you might need.
