Life insurance and critical illness insurance

Life insurance could be used to make sure your family are financially supported by providing a lump sum if you die. Alternatively critical illness insurance could provide a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a critical illness.

If you have children, a partner or other relatives who depend on your income to cover the household bills and living expenses, life insurance and critical illness insurance could provide a cash lump sum that could help ease financial worries in the event of your death or diagnosis of a critical illness. This isn't intended as a replacement for regular income.

At Santander we offer life insurance and critical illness insurance from Aviva to protect your family.

  • Life insurance: this aims to pay out a one-off cash lump sum if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness within the term of the policy.

  • Critical illness insurance: this aims to provide a one-off cash lump sum payment in the event of you being diagnosed with a specified critical illness covered by the policy. Not all conditions are covered.

Different products are available through our branches to those offered online and over the phone.

There are some important things to consider before you apply

  • When a claim for the main benefit has been paid,  your policy will end and cover will stop. If you have joint cover, the policy only pays out once.

  • If you stop paying premiums, your cover will end, and you will get nothing back.

  • At the end of your policy's term, your premiums will stop, your cover will end and you will get nothing back.

  • To make a claim for some critical illnesses, you will need to have permanent symptoms or an illness of a specified severity.

  • Not all critical illnesses are covered. For a full list of illnesses that are covered by the plans available online and over the phone, you should refer to the Critical Illness Plan Policy Summary (pdf and the Critical Illness Plan Policy Conditions (pdf).

Life insurance and critical illness insurance have no cash-in value at any time, and exclusions and limitations will apply. For full details of Life Insurance Plan and Critical Illness Plan, available online and over the phone, please read the policy summary and the policy conditions document on these pages. Please make sure you read all the information provided before getting a quote.

Although you may have protected your mortgage in the event of death or a critical illness, would your family be able to cover your other regular outgoings and maintain their lifestyle? A cash lump sum could provide your family with financial stability when they need it most.

We offer two types of cover online to support your family

Decreasing cover: this runs for a fixed period of time but the cash lump sum reduces each month over the term of the policy.

  • For example, decreasing cover is sometimes used to cover debts or the cost of raising children. The lump sum will reduce each month as the amount required to repay outstanding debts decreases or the need to provide ongoing support for children reduces as they get closer to financial independence. The premium will remain the same.

Increasing cover runs for a fixed period of time and the cash lump sum factors in the rising cost of living.

As time goes by, it's expected that the cost of living will go up - it's what's known as inflation. By choosing increasing cover you can help protect against the future effects of inflation, as the cover amount increases in line with the Consumer Prices Index (CPI). As the cover amount rises over time premiums will also increase in accordance with the policy conditions.
