Contactless payments

Pay quickly, conveniently and securely with contactless

A range of our debit and credit cards now come with contactless technology. This means you can pay for purchases of up to £30 in seconds wherever you see the Contactless Indicator.

  • Quick and easy: place your card against the reader, wait for the green light and your payment is complete

  • Convenient: no need to worry about loose change or remembering your PIN

  • Secure: contactless uses the same security features as Chip and PIN (you can learn more about this by going to the 'Security' tab)

  • Flexible: you can choose to use contactless or not as your card can still be used for Chip and PIN transactions

How contactless technology works
If you want to pay for a sandwich, cup of coffee, or any purchases of up to £30, contactless technology is a fast, easy and secure way to do it. You don’t need to enter your card PIN, just place your contactless card over the contactless reader and the payment is made.

  • Use it wherever you see the Contactless Indicator

  • Pay for purchases of up to £30 in seconds without entering your PIN

  • Your card never leaves your hand when making a payment

  • Choose whether you pay with contactless or Chip and PIN for smaller purchases

Using your contactless card
Any retailer who displays the Contactless Indicator can accept contactless payments. There are many shops, restaurants and cafes which already accept contactless payments and the list is growing. You can find a full list of places which accept contactless payments at MasterCard or Visa.

You must use your new contactless card with your PIN at least once then follow the steps below to start making contactless payments:

  1. When paying for purchases of up to £30, look for the Contactless Indicator

  2. Touch the reader with your contactless card

  3. Confirm successful payment when you see the green light and hear the beep

  4. The reader will confirm that your payment is approved

If you touch your purse or wallet containing more than one contactless card (including an Oyster card, contactless debit or credit card) on a reader you could experience card clash. Therefore we strongly recommend that you remove the card you want to use from your wallet or purse when touching the reader to make sure the right card is used. But don’t worry, if you do present two cards to the reader by mistake, only one payment will be taken because the card readers are only able to make one transaction at a time.

Security is our priority
Making payments without entering any security details or a PIN may raise some concerns. We’d like to reassure you just how safe and secure contactless payments actually are:

Protecting you
Contactless uses the latest secure encryption technology (the same as Chip and PIN) so you can feel confident when using it to pay for things. It only works when a card is close to the card reader. This makes it virtually impossible for any details to be intercepted while in use. For extra protection, sometimes you may have to enter your PIN during a contactless transaction just to make sure it’s always you using the card. To ensure cards cannot be intercepted and used fraudulently, new contactless cards will not work until you complete a Chip and PIN transaction.

When you pay with contactless

  • You’ll have a record of all your everyday purchases on your account statement

  • The contactless card readers can only carry out one transaction at a time; each transaction must be complete or void before another can take place

  • You couldn’t unknowingly make a purchase as you walk past a reader because the retailer must have entered the amount for you to approve first, and then your card has to be held within a few centimetres of the reader for longer than half a second

Lost or stolen cards
If your card is lost or stolen, you’re protected against fraud provided you let us know as soon as you realise your card is lost or stolen and you have taken the proper precautions to keep your card and security details safe, as outlined in our terms and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You can use your contactless card on London Buses, the tube, tram, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), London Overground and National Rail services that accept Oyster.

To pay with contactless, simply touch the card reader with your contactless card - when you hear the beep, and/or see a green light, your payment is complete in the same way as for Oyster. Make sure you pay the right fare by touching the reader with the card you want to pay with as you board a bus or tram and at the start of all journeys on the tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail and again at the end of the journey. Daily and Monday to Sunday capping is applied to journeys made using your contactless card.

Please note: If you pay with a contactless card you will be charged a full adult fare, concessions (such as Student, 60+) will not be applied.

It’s important to use the same contactless payment card for all your journeys. If you touch in on a yellow card reader with one contactless payment card and touch out with a different card, you could be charged two maximum fares for two incomplete journeys. Using different cards to pay for travel also means that you won’t be able to benefit from capping. If you think you have made an incomplete journey you can sign up for an online TfL account to be able to view up to 12 months of journey and payment history or you can call TfL Customer Services on 0343 222 1234.

For help where the incorrect card has been charged, please call TfL Customer Services on 0343 222 1234.

  • Yes, you can use your contactless card abroad just as you can in the UK. Contactless transactions will be accepted whenever the Contactless Indicator is displayed . The contactless transaction limit may vary depending on local limits.

  • No, you can use your contactless card as many times as you’d like each day, but each transaction must be £30 or less. Every so often we may ask you to enter your PIN as a security measure to verify that you, the authorised cardholder, are still in possession of the card.
