If you’re aged between 50 and 80 (inclusive), Over 50’s Life Assurance could help provide your family or loved ones with a fixed cash lump sum upon death, which could contribute towards funeral costs or other expenses.
 
What is Over 50’s Life Assurance?
 
It’s a life insurance policy that will pay a fixed cash lump sum to your loved ones when you die. The Over 50’s Life Assurance policy provides guaranteed life cover and is available to UK residents aged 50 to 80 years inclusive. The policy can only cover you and the amount of cover you’ll get depends on your age and the premiums you pay. When you apply there’s no medical and Aviva won’t ask any questions about your lifestyle.

There are some important things to consider before you apply

  • If you don’t pay your premiums during the premium term, your policy and your cover will end 30 days after your last payment was due and you won’t get any money back.

  • If you decide to end your policy, you won’t get any money back as the policy has no cash-in value.

  • The cash lump sum paid is fixed, so inflation will reduce what it can buy in the future. You should review your cover to ensure that it remains adequate over time.

  • Depending on how long you have the policy for, the amount paid out on your death may be less than the total amount you’ve paid in premiums.

  • If you die in the first year and your death isn’t caused by an accident, the guaranteed cash lump sum won't be paid out. Instead, an amount equal to the premiums will be paid.

Leave something for your loved ones

  • Guaranteed acceptance if you are a UK resident aged 50 to 80 years inclusive, and there are no medical or health questions.

  • Premiums are guaranteed never to rise - you choose the monthly premium from between £5 and £100 per month or decide on the amount you’d like to leave behind, within the premium payment limits. Depending on how long the policy runs, the amount paid out on death may be less than the total amount you’ve paid in premiums.

  • No medical or health checks required - cover starts as soon as the application is processed.

  • You can take out more than one policy as long as your monthly premium for all your policies is not more than £100 in total across all Aviva Over 50’s Life Assurance policies taken out with Santander.

  • Guaranteed cash lump sum specified when you take out the policy - which is paid out to your loved ones when you die. If you die in the first year as a result of an accident, the policy will pay out the guaranteed cash lump sum. If you die from any other cause in the first year, the policy will pay out an amount equal to the premiums paid. After the first policy anniversary if you die from any natural cause the policy will pay out the guaranteed cash sum, and if you die as a result of an accident the policy will pay out double the guaranteed cash sum.

  • You’ll either pay premiums for a maximum of 30 years or until the policy anniversary after your 90th birthday, whichever comes first. You will then stop paying your monthly premiums, however the cover will continue until you die.

  • The Over 50’s Life Assurance policy has the option to select either the amount of cover required or the monthly premium you would like to pay. 

You can put your Over 50’s Life Assurance policy in trust 
 
The cash lump sum paid out on death is currently free from income and capital gains tax but it may be subject to inheritance tax unless you put your policy in a suitable trust. If you need more information on trusts, please ask your Santander representative for further details. Tax rules may change in the future.
