Choice Current Account

Helping you avoid an Unarranged Overdraft

If you regularly use an Unarranged Overdraft the Choice Account can help you by:

  • Keeping the cost of fees down.

  • Stopping payments - wherever possible - that would take you into an Unarranged Overdraft.

For a £10 monthly fee we'll work to try and keep you out of an Unarranged Overdraft by stopping payments, where we can, that would take you over your overdraft limit or beyond a zero balance if you have no Arranged Overdraft. When we stop payments we won't charge you an Unpaid Transaction fee.

When a payment that you make takes you into an Unarranged Overdraft (such as when a retailer has accepted a debit card payment without checking that there's enough money in your account), we won't charge you a Paid Transaction Fee.

If you have an Arranged Overdraft on your Choice Current Account and you go beyond your limit we will continue to charge you the Arranged Overdraft Usage Fee.

No interest is paid on your in-credit balance.

You'll also get:

  • 24/7 access to your account using Online, Mobile and Telephone Banking.

  • Access nationwide via our branch network.

  • Free text and email alerts about your account.

  • Visa debit card for making purchases and accessing your money at cash machines.

Remember, if you switch your current account to us, we'll move it across in 7 working days, so you can start making the most of your account.

There are some simple steps you can take to avoid incurring fees:

  • Arrange for direct debits, standing orders or bill payments to come out of your account straight after your salary or other funding has been paid in.

  • Regularly view your current Arranged Overdraft limit to ensure it meets your needs. If you exceed your agreed limit, clear it immediately to prevent any additional fees being applied. You can check your account balance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using Online Banking, Telephone Banking, Mobile Banking or any cash machine.

How does it work?

This account is designed to help you avoid going into an Unarranged Overdraft. An Unarranged Overdraft is used when you make a payment which takes you beyond your Arranged Overdraft limit or below zero when you have no overdraft in place.

We try to help you avoid going into an Unarranged Overdraft by rejecting payments, where we can, which would take you into Unarranged Overdraft. This could mean, however, that important bills or even very small payments may not be paid. If you want us to consider making payments when you don't have enough money in your account, there are other current accounts available.

There are some circumstances when you make a payment that we can’t stop from leaving your account that may take you into an Unarranged Overdraft. For example:

  • When there isn't enough money in your account to cover the £10 monthly fee.

  • When a retailer accepts a debit card payments without checking with us that there is enough money in your account.

  • If a payment is made against an uncleared item (such as a cheque) which is later unpaid.

We won't charge you a Paid Transaction Fee if this happens.

If you have an Arranged Overdraft on your Choice Current Account and you go beyond your limit we will continue to charge you the Arranged Overdraft Usage Fee.

If you transfer from another Santander current account to the Choice Current Account then any authorised payments on your previous account will mean you may move into an Unarranged Overdraft upon transfer.

If you'd like to switch to us from another bank or building society we'll move all your Direct Debits, standing orders and your salary.

We'll close your old current account and make sure any payments to and from your old account are redirected to your Choice Current Account for 36 months.

EAR explained

EAR stands for Effective Annual Rate and represents the yearly cost of an overdraft, which takes account of how often we charge interest to the account, and does not include any other fees or charges.

Overdrafts depend on your circumstances and you must repay any overdraft when we ask in line with our General Terms and Conditions.

Information correct as at 6 May 2014.
