Select Current Account

The current account that gives you more with the Santander Select service. All for a £5 monthly fee to maintain the account.

  • Earn additional cashback of up to 15% at a range of major retailers when you use Retailer Offers with your Santander Select debit card

To open the account you'll need to:

  • Be 18 or over and live in the UK permanently
  • Either pay your main income of at least £5,000 a month into your Select Current Account (excluding transfers from other Santander accounts) or keep £75,000 in any Santander investment(s), savings or current accounts

To get cashback and interest you'll need to:

  • Pay at least £500 a month into your Select Current Account (excluding transfers from other Santander accounts)
  • Have at least 2 active Direct Debits

As well as interest on your balance and cashback on selected household bills, the Select Current Account also gives you:

  • Access to support abroad, including Select Embassy branches, which can offer you assistance in your home language and help you with international emergency calls and meeting room access (subject to availability).
  • Preferential rates on savings and mortgages and discounts on insurance products
  • Emergency cash and card replacement if your card is lost or stolen abroad. Available worldwide except Cuba, India, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and Turkmenistan.
  • Cash withdrawal in a foreign currency outside the UK: we’ll waive the 2.75% foreign exchange fee and £1.99/1.5% cash handling fee when you use Santander-branded cash machines in Germany, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, USA, Brazil and Poland. Please choose the option to transact in the local currency to avoid being charged fees.
  • £1,000 daily cash machine withdrawal limit. Not all cash machines allow you to withdraw £1,000 in one transaction so you may need to take out your money in multiple transactions.
  • Exclusive Santander Select debit card.

Interest and cashback
To earn interest and cashback you’ll need to pay in at least £500 a month (any interested paid, and payments between Santander personal accounts you’re named on won’t count towards this) and have at least 2 active Direct Debits.

Monthly interest
You can earn monthly interest of 1.50% AER/1.49% gross (variable) on your balance up to £20,000. Interest is received gross, with no income tax deducted. Take a look at our information pages to learn more

Cashback
You can earn 1-3% cashback on selected household bills paid by Direct Debit every month. Cashback is paid monthly. Use the cashback calculator to find out how much you could earn.

You can apply if

  • You're 18 or over and live in the UK permanently

You can have a maximum of 2 Select Current Accounts and 1|2|3 Current Accounts, 1 in your name and 1 in joint names.

We'll check regularly that you're still eligible for the Select Current Account. If you no longer meet the criteria, we'll contact you to explain your options.

We'll send you alerts about your balance and payments to help you avoid using an unarranged overdraft. You can manage your alert settings through Online Banking, calling us on 0800 032 3323 or visiting a branch.

Switching your existing current account to the Select Current Account

Stress-free switching in just 7 working days

  • You can either switch to a new account, or one you've already got with us

  • Our dedicated switcher team will switch all of your Direct Debits, standing orders and your salary or other income

  • Choose when your switch starts - this can be up to 60 days in the future

  • Your switch will only take 7 working days

  • We'll keep you updated of progress by letter, text and e-mail

  • We'll close your old account and redirect any payments to your Select Current Account 

  • You could get a 4 month fee-free Arranged Overdraft when you switch to us. (Overdrafts are offered depending on your circumstances.)

How to switch

Switching to Santander is hassle free and can be completed in just 7 working days.

You can apply online, in a branch or by calling us on 0800 032 3323. We will ask you during the application if you want to switch an account you hold elsewhere to Santander.

To switch you'll need to give us

  • your existing sort code and account number

  • your existing debit card number and expiry date. If you are switching a joint account to us, we'll need the debit card details for all applicants

Protect yourself from fraud

It’s very important that you keep your banking details private and secure.

  • Never share a Santander One Time Passcode (OTP) with another person. Not even a Santander employee.
  • Never download software or let anyone log on to your computer or devices remotely during or after a cold call.
  • Never enter your Online Banking details after clicking on a link in an email or text message.

You can apply for a new Select Current Account online in just 10 minutes if you:

  • are 18 years of age or over

  • live in the UK permanently 

  • meet the Select eligibility criteria
    • open a Select Current Account
    • either pay your main income of at least £5,000 per month into a Select Current Account (excluding transfers from other Santander accounts),
    • or keep £75,000 in any Santander investment(s), savings or current account.

  • If you apply for an overdraft and the amount we can give you is lower than your request, we’ll contact you to let you know what we can offer. We will ask you to confirm that you’re happy to go ahead before we open your account.

  • You will receive a new account number, card and PIN.

  • If you are successful, your account could be updated the same day.

  • You’ll need your existing account details handy to transfer.

  • If you have a Basic Current Account, you cannot transfer this account to the Select Current Account.

AER stands for Annual Equivalent Rate and shows what the interest rate would be if we paid interest and added it to your account each year.

Gross rate explained
The gross rate is the interest rate we pay where no income tax has been deducted.
Rates may change and we pay interest each month.

EAR explained

EAR stands for Effective Annual Rate and represents the yearly cost of an overdraft, which takes account of how often we charge interest to the account, and does not include any other fees or charges. Overdrafts depend on your circumstances and you must repay any overdraft when we ask in line with our General Terms and Conditions.
