Mobile to mobile payments: Paym

Use your mobile phone to pay people with Paym
Paym is a mobile to mobile service that lets you send and receive payments quickly and securely using just a mobile number.

It's offered by many banks, so as long as the person you're sending a payment to is registered for Paym with their own bank, you can send them payments using just their mobile number.

This service is available to you if you use Online and Mobile Banking. All you need to do is register your current account in Online Banking to receive money, then use our Mobile Banking app to send money from your mobile phone using the mobile number of the person you’re sending the money to. There’s no need for account numbers or sort codes.

You can send small amounts, like the cost of a cup of tea, or larger sums such as your share of a night out or household bill, up to a limit of £250 a day.

Payments are free and safe
Using Paym means you can pay amounts of up to £250 per day using just your mobile phone. You can pay anyone, as long as they are registered for Paym with their bank or building society.

What’s more Paym is free to use. You do need to have Santander Online Banking and Mobile Banking so that you can send and receive payments. Our Mobile Banking app is available for iPhone, iPad or AndroidTM phone users.

Because Paym was developed with the major banks and building societies it is a safe and secure way of paying. When you make a payment you’re logged in to Mobile Banking, so any information about your bank account and the amounts you send and receive are safe behind your log on details.
You can find out more about the Paym service here.

For more details on getting up and running with Paym take a look at the ‘Get started’ tab.

You're safe because

  • You use your Online Banking log in details: transactions are completely secure behind your log in details for your Online and Mobile Banking.

  • You don't need to share your bank details: people who pay you through Paym only need your mobile phone number.

  • We send you a One Time Passcode: when you register for Paym or ask to change the way you use it, we'll double check it’s you by sending a One Time Passcode to your mobile.

  • You're covered by our Online and Mobile Banking Commitment: as long as you take precautions (like keeping your security details private) if in the unlikely event funds are taken from your account as a result of fraud, we will refund you and restore your account to the state it would have been in had the unauthorised payment transaction not taken place.

If you lose or change your mobile phone
Your bank details are still secure. We don't store account information on your phone and Mobile Banking is protected by the security details that you enter when you log on. For this reason as long as you’ve kept your log on details private your accounts will be secure.

If you change your phone number, you'll need to call us on 0800 917 9170 to let us know, and re-register to send payments through Paym using your new device. If you keep the same phone number, you'll just need to re-register for Paym with your device.

Visit our security centre to find out how to keep your details safe.

Lines are open 7am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 9pm on Sundays.

  • Paym would like to notify you that someone has tried to pay you using Paym. On this occasion, you won't be receiving the payment that triggered the message, but if you register for the service, you'll receive any future payments.

Be aware that Paym only sends the following standard message:
"Someone has tried to send you money via Paym, the UK's mobile payment service. To learn more about Paym, contact your bank or building society. Opt-out? Reply STOP"

Paym will never ask you to send any personal, account or security information by text message. They will also never send any messages that contain a direct link to a website or to our logon pages. If you're concerned about a message, please contact us immediately

  • If you no longer wish to receive payments through Paym or want to de-register your mobile phone number, please call Online Banking support on 0800 917 9170. We're open 7am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 9pm on Sundays.

  • Security is the top priority for Paym and strict measures are in place to make sure that the service is secure.

Paym has set the highest standards around password activation and mobile number verification and all participating banks and building societies are required to sign up to a security code of conduct for the service.

Paym uses the tried and tested Faster Payments process and will use the same strict security levels applied to current accounts today.

Paym benefits from the same strong legal protection that already applies to other types of payments. Further information can be found on the Payments UK website.
