Ana’s love of opera was influenced by her grandmother from an early age. She studied at the Conservatorio National de Música in Mexico City where she realised her passion for music and singing. Her musical education continued in London at another member of Santander Universities, the Royal Academy of Music. Here she received operatic master classes and performed at some of London’s most esteemed venues.
How did you find out about the Santander Universities scholarship?
I found out from the director of the Academy, Dennis O’Neill. I had been offered a place of study, but I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to take it until I was made aware that I was to receive the Santander Universities scholarship. The opportunity this scholarship has given me to study at the International Academy of Voice has already changed the course of my life.
What has been the most defining experience in your operatic training so far?
Definitely, the International Academy of Voice. I am grateful for every step that has taken me to where I am now. I have a very clear sense of purpose and of direction and I feel confident about the steps that will take me in the right direction. And of course I still enjoy the day to day blessing of the highest level of music making. I call it singer’s heaven.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
I want to stay in Europe, and work in different countries. However, one of my dearest goals is to perform in the Palacio de Bellas Artes the opera house in Mexico City, because of what this house means to me. Also at Glyndebourne, because I admire their productions and I love the history and the aura around the festival.
Any chance of breaking into this profession will be through having been able to mature as a singer and artist here at the International Academy of Voice. Reasons for wanting to become a fully mature singer have become clear. Music is not a luxury but a human necessity, and that opera is one of society’s most precious gifts.
