How do I register for Power of Attorney?
To register for Power of Attorney, you must obtain the correct documentation. These are available from your solicitor, or from stationers OyezStraker on 0207 232 1000.
To add a Power of Attorney to a Direct Saver or Postal Saver the Power of Attorney documents, or a certified copy, should be sent with a covering letter to:

For security reasons all further correspondence regarding the account must be by post.
If the account in question is an eSaver, please call us on 0845 609 0014. We're open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 9pm. We'll then send you a Letter of Declaration to sign, which includes a variation to the account's Terms and Conditions. This covers the attorney's use of PINs, telephone banking numbers and passwords.
The signed Letter of Declaration should then be returned, together with the Power of Attorney documents, or a certified copy to the address above.
How do I notify you that an account holder has died?
The first step is to visit your local Santander branch where our staff will be able to advise you further and provide you with our information leaflet, 'Arranging financial affairs when someone dies' You will need to bring with you:
- Certified copy of the death certificate – this is available from the registrar office
- Grant of Representation, or, in Scotland, Certificate of Confirmation, if you have them
- Proof of your identification e.g. full UK passport or driving license
- Plus any of the following belonging to the account holder:
Savings account passbooks
Cheque books
Any cards held on the account, for example Visa Debit Card, Visa Electron Card, Cash Card, Credit Card
Bondshare certificates
Santander or Royal London Policy or Plan Schedules Ltd products
A note of any other account or policy numbers
We will put all accounts on hold immediately to prevent any further mail being sent in the deceased's name. If £15,000 or less is held in the deceased's Santander savings and personal banking accounts, we may be able to release funds on receipt of a completed Small Estates statutory declaration form.
If you are unsure of your legal position or would like some advice about obtaining the Grant of Representation or Certificate of Confirmation, you should talk to your solicitor or the Citizens Advice Bureau.
